1. Choose one of the following Coastal and oceanic landforms. Describe how and where this landform was / are created and provide links to at least 3 images. Provide your references.
Cove A cove is formed by differential erosion which happens when softer rocks become worn away by harder rocks around them when they are forced together. The harder rocks then form a circular bay due to further erosion. Coves are found all over the world and not concentrated in a specific area. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lulworth_Cove http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jurassic_Coast http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stair_Hole https://www.google.ca/search?q=cove&aq=f&hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=-2F5UZegFsGi0AGotoCAAQ&biw=1024&bih=624&sei=BGJ5UbfYHIm_0AGe5IB4#biv=i%7C6%3Bd%7C81rYuqK-8l96AM%3A
A tombolo is a deposition landform in which an island is attached to the mainland by a narrow piece of land such as a spit or bar. A true tombolo is formed by wave refraction. As waves near an island, they are slowed by the shallow water surrounding it. These waves then refract or bend around the island to the opposite side as they approach. This motion creates a Tombolo.
The mid-ocean ridge was formed by tectonic plate movements which forces lava through the created cracks and when the lava cooled it formed the ridge. They form wherever a continental plate slides underneath an oceanic plate.
Continental Shelves are formed from the rise in sea level of the oceans, causing water to flood the land. Most continental shelves are created inbetween glacial periods, as the ice melts, and the sea levels rise. Continental shelves occur in coastal regions, as they are next to the rising oceans.
A lagoon is a long, shallow body of saltwater which has been separated from its main body of water by a coral reef, a shoal, barrier islands, sandbars, etc. The depths of lagoons always depend on the sea level - when the sea level is low, lagoons resemble swamps; when the sea level is high, they appear like lakes and bays.
Lagoons are built up over long periods of time, when sand or reef builds up to create somewhat of a wall, separating the shallow lagoon area from the main ocean. As such, lagoons are always found near the coast.
Oceanic trenches are long deep depressions found in the ocean. They are commonly formed when a oceanic plate subducts underneath a continental plate. They are also sometimes formed when a heavier oceanic plate subducts under a lighter oceanic plate. The Mariana's Trench was formed from oceanic plates. Trenches are formed along plate boundaries and expecially around the Ring of Fire,
A coral reef is made from calcium carbonate that is produced by coral and is inhabited with small aquatic lifeforms. After the last ice age, sea levels rose and most of the reefs formed, less than 10,000 years ago. The Indo-Pacific region holds over 90% of all of these coral reefs.
A beach ridge is a wave-swept ridge that runs parallel to the shoreline, it is usually made up of sands and sediments. A fall in the level of the water often isolates the ridge from the water that created it. They are found along dry lakes and inland of the Great Lakes, because when they were created there was a higher water level, due to glacial melting.
A shoal, also known as a sandbar or gravel bar, is a linear landform inside our partially inside a body of water. It is usually made of silt, sand, or other sedimentary materials, and are typically long and narrow. They develop in or near streams or currents that cause the deposition of sedimentary materials, hence their composition. Their formation causes the depth of the body of water in which they exist to decrease, and this result can be widespread.
Coral reefs are underwater structures made from calcium carbonate secreted by corals. Coral reefs are colonies of tiny animals found in marine waters that contain few nutrients. After the last ice age, sea levels rose and most of the reefs formed, less than 10,000 years ago.
